According to reporting cited by The Quint, one of the accused had followed Ansari from a market about 15 km away from about 7:30 am, keeping the others informed, and the vehicle was stopped at around 9:30 am.[1] The killing took place on the same day that Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that killing people in the name of cow worship was unacceptable.[2]
