== Incident ==

According to Superintendent of Police Rajesh Hingerkar, a group of men went to a forest area after hearing that two men were slaughtering a cow there, and beat one of them to death.<ref name="quint-2018" /> The victims were a 45-year-old tailor from Maihar town, identified as Riaz by Deccan Chronicle and as Siraj by The Quint, and his friend Shakeel.<ref name="dc-2018" /><ref name="quint-2018" /> Other men in their group fled.<ref name="dc-2018" /> The attack took place on the night between 17 and 18 May 2018.<ref name="dailyo-2018" />

The tailor died at the district hospital in Satna a few hours after the assault, according to the Hindustan Times, and Shakeel was taken to a hospital in Jabalpur, where he was reported to be in a coma.<ref name="ht-2018" /><ref name="dc-2018" /><ref name="quint-2018" /> Police said they found a slaughtered bull and meat in sacks at the spot.<ref name="dc-2018" /> About 400 police personnel were deployed in the area, according to the Inspector General of Police of Rewa range.<ref name="quint-2018" />

== Investigation and legal proceedings ==

Police arrested four residents of Amgara village and registered a case against them for murder and attempt to murder.<ref name="quint-2018" /><ref name="dc-2018" /> Before that, police registered a case against the two victims under the Madhya Pradesh Cow Slaughter Ban Act, 2004, and the Madhya Pradesh Agriculture Cattle Preservation Act, 1959, on the complaint of one of the four accused.<ref name="quint-2018" /> The families of both victims denied the slaughter allegation.<ref name="dc-2018" />

The meat seized at the spot was not sent for forensic testing; police said a civil surgeon at the local hospital thought it might be beef.<ref name="dailyo-2018" /><ref name="scroll-2018" /> In a November 2018 article, activist Harsh Mander wrote that Shakeel had been arrested on the cow slaughter charge, and that the accused attackers had been released from prison.<ref name="scroll-2018" /> No report of a trial outcome in either case was found.

== Reactions ==

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh visited Satna on 20 May 2018 to inaugurate a statue, and neither he nor Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had commented on the killing by the following day, according to a DailyO opinion article.<ref name="dailyo-2018" /> A fact-finding team of human rights activists questioned the police account and reported that Bajrang Dal activists were present at the site before police arrived.<ref name="scroll-2018" />

== Aftermath ==

By November 2018 the tailor's widow, who had four children, had closed his tailoring shop and had received no government assistance, according to Harsh Mander's report for Scroll.in.<ref name="scroll-2018" /> The same report said Shakeel had rods and screws in his hands and might not regain their use, and that his wife was caring for him full time.<ref name="scroll-2018" />
